LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Princess Drive is an ideal base for visiting many interesting tourist attractions. In addition, for those interested in exploring the countryside, there are 9 excellent circular walks (6-10 miles) starting from Alton.

Jane Austen’s House at Chawton is a 25 minute walk from 8 Princess Drive. The house is of late 17th Century design and still houses objects owned by Jane Austen and her family, including her writing table, books and paintings.

A 10 minute drive from Princess Drive is the former home of the naturalist the Reverend Gilbert White. The 18th Century house, which is located in Selborne, inspired many of his writings and is set in over 20 acres of restored gardens and parkland.
A host of events and activities are held during the year including, The Unusual Plants Fair, Jazz in June, and the popular Mulled Wine Day. Within the house you will also find the Oates Museum. This interesting exhibition commemorates the Oates family and their exploits; particularly Captain Lawrence Oates, who accompanied Captain Scott to the South Pole in 1911.

Alton is home to the famous Watercress Line Steam Railway Line. It is a fine experience to travel through the beautiful Hampshire countryside by steam.

Special events are held throughout the year including the popular “Day out with Thomas” and the “Santa Express”.
